Dubby Breaks – Audiovisual DJ Mix

In recent times I’ve been experimenting with ways to use video content alongside the music. Part of this experimentation has had me tinkering with the amazing Touchdesigner software by Derivative. This video was generated in real-time by a Touchdesigner network that I hacked together. It listens to the music and signals from my dj equipment and then animates the visuals in a semi-random manner with the information it collects. Maybe it looks a bit rainbow-pukey in parts, but overall I’m happy enough with the result to share it with you.

The music in this mix is dub-influenced breakbeat. A sound that never gets tired and always has me throwing shapes from behind the decks. I hope you enjoy it!

New mixes for 2017

Three fresh DJ sets for 2017!

While away in Goa I’ve been keeping myself in the mix at every opportunity, and I’m happy to bring you the results from some of those sessions as a collection of new mixes.

First up is the “Bass & Breaks” mix, which is dedicated to the dark and spacious sounds currently dominating parts of the scene. Music from the likes of Stanton Warriors, Nixon, Guau and Plump DJs.

“Psy & Tech Breaks” focuses on the progressive and trippy realms of underground breaks. Inspired by my current stay in psytrance-capital Anjuna it has tracks from artists including Hedflux, Monk3ylogic, Bad Tango and Blazer.

The third mix, “Dub & Breaks”, carries itself along on huge dub-reggae basslines and oldskool funk breaks. Switching from heavyweight breaks to classic skanks and back again, you can expect to hear an hour of music from Dreadzone, Bob & Damian Marley, Dub Pistols, Jinx In Dub, King Yoof and more!

Phat Friday Megamix vol.3

Damn Right, a9ent0ran9e & Will MD present the third installment of the Phat Friday Mega Mix. Inspired by our weekly ‘Thank Phat It’s Friday‘ show on NSB Radio, this mix is a collection of our favourite breakbeat tunes from the last couple of years to celebrate the broadcast of our 300th show.

Green Screen DJ Mix

Technology is finally making childhood dreams achievable without even needing to leave the house. I woke up one morning and decided to build a green screen set in our living room. I hired a camera and filmed myself djing in front of it. A few days tinkering later I had my very own cheesy CG music video. Just like the ones I used to see on Saturday morning TV in the early 90’s. 🙂

Mixing some of my favourite bass-heavy breakbeat, the video features music from Zed’s Dead, Drumattic Twins, North Base, Bassbin Twins, Twins Break, Ribs & IG88, Freefall Collective and Wizard. There’s a few loops and scratches thrown in for good measure too.

Space Acid Blues

The first video in a series entitled ’64 Bars’. (Fairly easy to see the theme I’m going for here). I challenged myself to complete this song and video in the six evenings I had free over a two week period.

A fairly straight up breakbeat sound with squelchy filtered arps and classic vocal samples dotted amongst spacey fx.

Video made in 3DS Max and After Effects. Audio in Ableton Live.

Control Circus – Shenanigans

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of our favourite time-travelling gallifreyan, Doctor Who, a9entoran9e and myself have given away one of the musical noodlings to have come out of our collaborative Control Circus project.

Featuring the voices of the eleventh Doctor and his companions Amy and Rory, this is a grimey, synth laden, skippy breaks number and can be downloaded free from our Thank Phat blog. While you’re there, why not help yourself to some of our weekly podcasts? They’re free too.
